I once again have the pleasure of working with my good friend Gev Kazanchyan (not to mention a few other dear beer peeps like Firestone Walker’s Jace Milstead, as well as the lovely Paige Reilly and David “The Gueuzehound” Watrous) to put together a beer pairing to help raise money for a good cause.
After working with Gev at the recent beer vs. wine showdown at College of the Canyons, we talked about what would be next. Well, here it is!

KFC Double Down: Gambling With Your Health

KFC Double Down Sandwich
Perhaps playing for cash in Vegas isn’t exciting enough for you, but risking your life in Russian Roulette seems a bit too extreme? Enter the Colonel. His new passport to heart failure, dubbed the “Double Down”, seems to celebrate sweeping several of the seven deadly sins under the proverbial rug. I wish I’d been in the KFC marketing department when they thought up the name: “Since each subsequent bite is like gambling with your health, why don’t we name it Double Down?”
So, what the hell is this behemoth? I’m glad you asked. Not looking to be outdone by other gustatory abominations like the McRib, KFC decided to stack two slices of Monterey Jack cheese, two slices of Pepper Jack, two pieces of bacon, and an oil slick better known as the Colonel’s hate sauce in between “two thick and juicy boneless white meat chicken filets”. Ignoring all the obvious roads that lead straight to cardiac arrest, I have to immediately point out that this is no sandwich. (more…)
“Grill It! With Bobby Flay” Video Results
0The results from my Bobby Flay video tryout are in! …And I wasn’t chosen this time, sadly.
But, I wanted to sincerely thank you all for the unexpected and overwhelming support! It’s amazing to see how many people that I’ve known come out and rally for me. Your comments and well wishes truly touched my heart, and for that I send you my utmost appreciation and thanks. And for those perfect strangers that came on board and voted for me, you rock too! Some of the nicest encouragement came alongside names I didn’t recognize, which was doubly flattering.
Out of the 186 submissions, mine was the fourth most watched as well as the fourth highest rated, but I suppose Food Network saw things differently. Their programming as of late has become somewhat of a monoculture, and I guess there wasn’t a place for someone so cool and so different this time around! 
Anyway, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. Onward and upward I say! Please keep your eyes on my website for upcoming projects, including details on a forthcoming cookbook due out early next year, and perhaps another book next summer if my proposal goes through!

Beeramisu Recipe: Beer + Tiramisu = Beeramisu

Beeramisu -- My kind of dessert
I believe it was the great Archimedes that famously postulated Beer + Tiramisu = Beeramisu, thenceforth enlightening the masses to the goodness of desserts made with beer. Some historians contend with this belief, arguing that beeramisu was nothing short of divine creation, citing an obscure heretical version of the Bible which reads, “And on the seventh day, He rested… and ate some wicked awesome beeramisu.”
The fact is — the exact origins of beeramisu are unknown and shrouded in mystery. OK, so it probably didn’t derive from some mathematical theorem or antediluvian Biblical verse, but it certainly is no original creation of mine. It was Paul Barbano’s The Bartenders Beer Cookbook
About two months ago, I was asked to host a beer and dessert pairing for the first-ever LA Beer Week. I was happy to oblige, and I immediately set out to concoct the best damn beeramisu recipe I possibly could. Having experimented with porters and bocks in the past, I wanted to try an even darker beer, perhaps one brewed with coffee beans for extra depth. There it was. The little light bulb in my brain had a flicker of rare genius — AleSmith Speedway Stout. Rich with flavors of roasted chocolate and coffee, it proved an excellent complement to the espresso and cocoa powder called for in my adapted recipe.
As an added bonus, you’ll have a good few glasses of beer to wash it down with. Why not have your cake and drink it too? (more…)
